'They’re not like the others': Breaking down the dangers of the model minority myth

The seemingly 'positive' stereotypes commonly associated with the model minority myth that are regarded as harmless have silenced the struggles of Asian Americans.

It was an honor and a privilege to be able to speak with Katie Kim, producer at WBIR and an incredible ally in working for our people, our Asian and Pacific Islander American community. The model minority myth has been used to control us and to put us against other racial minorities in this country and across the globe, but we must take it down.

There is so much to fight against — so much personal hate and discrimination, so much systemic racism and historical violence, but we will never be alone as long we stand with each other. And I was so heartened to be able to speak on issues affecting the ADHD and autistic communities. We will not be invisible any longer, and we will see justice in the medical and social fields within our lifetimes.

Music: William Grant Still’s “Grief” performed by myself and pianist Antonio Truyols, and the Sarabande from J. S. Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1.
